π· Sparkling Shiraz
Australian red sparkling wine made from Shiraz.
Sparkling Shiraz is an Australian red sparkling wine made from the Shiraz grape. In other countries Shiraz is called Syrah. The result is a dark wine with bubbles, an unusual combination in the world of sparkling wine. Like other sparkling reds, such as Lambrusco, it gets its colour from the skins of black grapes. The wine ferments and is then bottled for a second fermentation. The wine is often aged in oak and a little sugar is added, so the taste is slightly sweet, with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, spice and chocolate. The tannins are soft. Sparkling Shiraz comes from Australia, where it is drunk chilled with roast meat, barbecue and festive dishes, for example at Christmas. It is a wine of warm countries and differs greatly from light Italian sparkling red. It belongs to the sparkling wine group, specifically sparkling red. The wine is full and high in alcohol, so it should be drunk in small portions.
