📍 Languedoc-Roussillon
A vast Mediterranean region from Nîmes to the Pyrenees.
Languedoc-Roussillon is a huge Mediterranean wine area in the south of France. It stretches from the city of Nîmes in the east to the Pyrenees on the border with Spain. By vineyard area it is one of the largest wine zones in the world.
Summers are hot and dry, winters mild, and wind blows. The vine does well, so heavy treatments are often unnecessary. The main grapes are Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Red, white, rosé, sparkling and sweet wines are made.
The area is divided into two large parts: Languedoc and Roussillon. In the south, closer to Spain, Roussillon is known for sweet fortified wines. Wines are sold under local names as well as under the broad labels "Pays d'Oc" and "Terres du Midi". In the past the area was known for bulk wine, while today there are many wines of high level. It belongs to French wine as one of its most varied and dynamic regions.
