π Lavaux
Terraces above Lake Geneva, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Lavaux is a terraced vineyard area above Lake Geneva in Switzerland. It is a protected appellation and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The slopes stretch for about thirty kilometres along the shore in the canton of Vaud. The terraces were built by hand over centuries and are held by stone walls.
The sun reaches the vines in three ways: straight from the sky, reflected from the lake, and reflected from the warm terrace walls. This helps the grapes ripen. The main grape is white Chasselas, from which wines with mineral freshness are made. Lavaux has several famous places: DΓ©zaley, Calamin, Lutry, Villette, Epesses, Saint-Saphorin, Chardonne and Vevey-Montreux.
Lavaux belongs to the wine canton of Vaud. Nearby lies Chablais, also known for Chasselas. These wines seldom leave the country, and most are drunk by the Swiss themselves. Lavaux is a popular place for walks: you can follow paths between vineyards and stop at cellars for a tasting.
