🥃 Maine cider brandy (Eau-de-vie de cidre du Maine)
French cider brandy from southern Mayenne: AOC and an EU-protected name since 1989; column distillation only, at least 3 years in oak up to 750 l; second name Fine du Maine.
Maine cider brandy (Eau-de-vie de cidre du Maine) is a French strong spirit made from cider of apples and pears from the south of the Mayenne department. It is a controlled appellation of origin (AOC) and an EU-protected name since 1989; Fine du Maine is also an allowed name. It is distilled only in a column and aged in oak for at least three years.
Region. The zone covers 141 communes over 2,609 km² in southern Mayenne and the north of Maine-et-Loire, on the Armorican Massif below 160 m, with 600–800 mm of rain a year. Here meadow orchards survive: high-trunk trees take up at least half of the orchard area of a farm.
Raw material and distillation. Orchards must have at least five bitter apple varieties; perry pears are also allowed. Cider ferments slowly, without yeast or heating, and it may be distilled no earlier than 42 days after pressing. The apparatus is a copper column only, up to 150 hl per day, heated by open fire; the fresh spirit is up to 72% ABV.
Aging. The spirit matures at least 36 months in oak casks up to 750 l, in cellars without air conditioning, and for a distillation year on the label, 10 years. Age marks: Réserve from 3 years, VSOP from 4, Hors d'Âge or Napoléon from 6, XO from 10.
Why this matters to you. Even the youngest bottle with this name has three years in oak, so it is always an aged spirit. It is strong, from 40% ABV, and a serving contains a lot of ethanol. The WHO reminds us: there is no safe level of alcohol.
