Protected spirit name ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 5 Updated:

French cider brandy from Brittany: AOC and an EU-protected name since 1989; at least 2 years in oak casks up to 700 l, from 40% ABV; other names are Fine Bretagne and Lambig de Bretagne.

Breton cider brandy (Eau-de-vie de cidre de Bretagne) is a French strong spirit distilled from cider made of Breton cider apples. It is a controlled appellation of origin (AOC) and an EU-protected name since 1989. Before sale the brandy is aged at least two years in oak, and bottled strength is from 40% ABV. Local names are Fine Bretagne and Lambig de Bretagne.

Region and raw material. The zone covers 372 communes in five departments of historic Brittany on the Armorican Massif, below 120 m above sea level, with a mild oceanic climate. Every orchard grows at least five bitter cider apple varieties, which must cover at least 70% of the orchard; irrigating trees that already bear fruit is forbidden.

Production. Cider ferments slowly on its own, without yeast, heating or preservatives, and it may be distilled no earlier than 28 days after pressing. A copper pot still with double distillation and a small copper column are allowed; at least half of the spirit must come from the column. Fresh spirit must be below 72% ABV.

Aging and labelling. The brandy matures in oak casks up to 700 l for at least 24 months, and for a distillation year on the label, 10 years. Age marks: VS from 2 years, Réserve from 3, VSOP from 4, Hors d'Âge from 6, XO from 10. In the 19th century it was drunk by sailors and port workers in Saint-Malo, Paimpol and Lorient.

Why this matters to you. Words like Lambig or Fine Bretagne on the label mean the same protected spirit, and the age mark shows the minimum years in cask. A serving of strong spirit contains a lot of ethanol. The WHO reminds us: there is no safe level of alcohol.
