📜 Montefalco Sagrantino

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1 Updated:

A very dense red wine from Sagrantino near the town of Montefalco in Umbria.

Montefalco Sagrantino is a very full red wine made from the Sagrantino grape around the town of Montefalco in Umbria, in central Italy. The name is protected as a geographical indication of the European Union and is listed in the eAmbrosia register.

Sagrantino is a local grape that is hardly grown anywhere else. Its berries have very thick skin and many tannins. So the wine is dark, powerful and tannic. To soften the tannins, the wine is aged in barrel and bottle for several years before sale. Alongside the dry wine, a sweet wine from partly dried grapes is also made in Montefalco.

Umbria lies between Tuscany and Rome, and Montefalco is a hilly area of olive groves and vineyards. The climate is moderate and the summer warm.

The wine is worth drinking with meat, game and aged cheeses: rich food balances the tannins well. When young it can be harsh, and it softens with the years. As with any alcohol, it should be drunk in moderation.
