π Sagrantino
A very tannic red grape of Umbria, the base of Montefalco Sagrantino.
Sagrantino is a very tannic red grape from Umbria in Italy. It grows almost only around the small town of Montefalco. Its berries are dark with thick skins, and the wines are dense and strongly tannic.
The main wine from it is called Montefalco Sagrantino and belongs to the top Italian category. The wine is aged for a long time to soften the tannins. A sweet wine called passito is also made from semi-dried berries. In the past the sweet version was the main one, and the dry one appeared later.
The grape is one of the gems of Italian wine and an example of local culture: it hardly grows outside Umbria. If you like dense red wines, Sagrantino is worth trying. It is served with meat and aged cheeses. The wine suits keeping and opens up with age. Softness does not come at once. Sagrantino wines are counted among the most tannic in the world.
