🍾 Mumm
Also known as: G. H. Mumm, Champagne Mumm
A Champagne house in Reims, founded in 1827 by the Mumm brothers; part of the Pernod Ricard group since 2005.
Mumm is a Champagne house in Reims, in the Marne department. According to the house, the brothers Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp Mumm, sons of Peter Arnold Mumm, whose family wine firm P.A. Mumm had traded in Cologne since 1761, officially created their Champagne house in Reims in 1827.
According to the house, it farms nearly 218 ha of vines, 160 ha of them grand cru, in eight villages including Aÿ, Bouzy, Verzenay and Cramant. Its emblem is the red ribbon of Cordon Rouge: Georges Hermann Mumm had a red silk ribbon placed on the neck of each bottle in the 1870s. The range includes Grand Cordon, Le Rosé, RSRV Blanc de Blancs and the prestige cuvée R. Lalou. Since 2005 Mumm has belonged to the Pernod Ricard group.
Champagne is a wine with a protected designation of origin (PDO). The bubbles come only from a second fermentation in the bottle, the wine is aged for at least 15 months before sale (36 for vintage), and all production takes place only within the delimited area. Mumm is a brand; Champagne is the name of a place.
Why it matters to you. On the label, brut and blanc de blancs are terms set by the rules, while names such as “Cordon Rouge” or “RSRV” are the house’s own designations. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol.
