🍷 Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise
A sweet fortified Muscat wine from the southern Rhône Valley.
Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise is a sweet fortified Muscat wine from the south of the Rhône valley in France. It is made around the village of Beaumes-de-Venise. There is one grape: white Muscat, Muscat à petits grains. It gives a bright floral aroma with notes of grape, rose petal and apricot.
It is a vin doux naturel, a "naturally sweet wine". Fermentation is interrupted by adding grape spirit. The yeast stops, and part of the natural sugar stays in the wine. The strength is around 15% and the taste is sweet and fresh. It is served chilled, as an aperitif or with dessert, fruit, soft cheeses and blue cheeses.
Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise belongs to French wine and to fortified wines. Next to it, the southern Rhône makes dry red wines under another appellation. Sweet wine is served in small glasses and should not be kept too long once opened. As with any alcohol, it is best drunk in moderation.
