🍷 Rivesaltes

Type of wine ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 4

A sweet fortified wine from Roussillon, white, amber or red.

Rivesaltes is a sweet fortified wine from Roussillon, an area in southern France by the Spanish border. It is counted as a vin doux naturel: fermentation is stopped by adding neutral grape spirit, and the sugar of the grapes stays in the wine. The main grape is Grenache, white, grey or black, with Muscat sometimes added.

There are several styles. White is pale and fresh. Amber, called ambré, spends years in barrels and gains flavours of nuts, honey and dried fruit. Red, called tuilé, is also aged long and has a brick tint. The most aged wines can keep for decades.

Roussillon is one of the warmest parts of France, with a dry climate and strong sun. Other wines of this type are made nearby: Banyuls and Maury. Rivesaltes belongs to French wine, and the category of vins doux naturels is related to Portuguese port. The wine is served chilled with desserts, cheese and nuts.
