Also known as: pasta numbers, Barilla numbers, De Cecco numbers

Catalogue numbers that pasta makers print on the pack to identify each shape; every brand uses its own system.

Pasta shape numbers are catalogue numbers that Italian pasta makers print on the pack next to the name of the shape. Every brand has its own system, so the same number means different shapes at different brands, and one shape carries different numbers.

Why numbers. The number identifies a format in production: one die, one size, one cooking time. Within a brand the numbers often form a family: at Barilla, Spaghettini n.3, Spaghetti n.5, Spaghetti Grossi n.7 and Spaghettoni n.8 get thicker as the number grows, and the cooking time rises from 5 to 13 minutes. There is no common standard between brands: Barilla n.5 is spaghetti, Rummo n.5 is Spaghetti Grossi, Voiello uses three-digit numbers such as 104, and Garofalo uses compound numbers such as 8-25 or 40-3.

Numbers of the most popular shapes (from the brands' official sites; a brand missing from a line has no such numbered product in our data):

Spaghetti: Barilla 5 · De Cecco 12 · Garofalo 9 · Rummo 3 · Divella 8 (Spaghetti Ristorante) · Agnesi 3 · Voiello 104 Linguine: Barilla 13 · De Cecco 7 · Garofalo 12 · Rummo 13 · Divella 14 · Agnesi 10 · Voiello 112 Penne rigate: Barilla 73 · De Cecco 41 · Garofalo 70 (Penne Ziti Rigate) · Rummo 66 · Divella 27 (Penne Ziti Rigate) · Agnesi 19 Fusilli: Barilla 98 · De Cecco 34 · Garofalo 63 · Rummo 48 · Divella 40 · Agnesi 102 · Voiello 141 Farfalle: Barilla 265 · De Cecco 93 · Garofalo 78 · Rummo 85 · Divella 85 · Voiello 192 Rigatoni: Barilla 89 · De Cecco 24 · Garofalo 35 · Rummo 50 · Divella 17 · Voiello 124 Bucatini: Barilla 9 · De Cecco 15 · Garofalo 14 · Rummo 6 · Divella 6 Capellini: Barilla 1 · De Cecco 9 · Rummo 1 · Divella 11

How to use it. When a recipe names one brand's number, look for the shape name, not the number, in another brand's range, and check the cooking time on the pack.

Frequently asked questions

What does Barilla n.5 mean?

It is Barilla's medium-thickness spaghetti, with a cooking time of 9 minutes. The thinner Spaghettini are n.3, the thicker Spaghetti Grossi n.7.

Are pasta numbers the same across brands?

No. Each brand numbers its shapes its own way: n.5 is spaghetti at Barilla but Spaghetti Grossi at Rummo.

What can replace De Cecco n.12?

It is De Cecco's classic spaghetti; look for spaghetti from another brand (Barilla n.5, Garofalo n.9, Rummo n.3) and check the cooking time on the pack.
