Philipponnat is a Champagne house in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. According to the house, the first of the family to settle in Champagne was Apvril Le Philipponnat, captain of a Swiss unit from the canton of Fribourg, and the house dates its establishment in Champagne from 1522. In 1910 the brothers Auguste and Pierre Philipponnat founded their own company and acquired the cellars of the Château de Mareuil. Today the house has developed 20 ha of premier and grand cru vineyards, partner growers entrust it with their grapes, and it describes its progress as the work of 16 generations.

According to the house, Pierre Philipponnat acquired the Clos des Goisses in 1935: almost six hectares in fourteen plots on a slope of 35 to 45°. The house calls it one of the oldest walled vineyards in the region and says Pierre created the first “mono-cru” of Champagne. The wine has been made every year since 1988; it is vinified mainly in wooden barrels without malolactic fermentation, aged nine to eleven years in the cellar and given a low dosage of 4 g/l.

Champagne is a wine with a protected designation of origin (PDO). According to the Comité Champagne, the wine ferments a second time in the bottle and matures on the lees for at least 15 months, and for vintage cuvées at least three years. Philipponnat is a brand; Champagne is the name of a place. The WHO reminds that there is no safe amount of alcohol that does not affect health.
