📜 Pouilly-Fuissé
The finest white wine of the Mâconnais, from Chardonnay, below the limestone cliffs of Solutré.
Pouilly-Fuissé is the best white wine of the Mâconnais, made from Chardonnay. The vineyards lie beneath the limestone cliffs of Solutré in southern Burgundy, France. The name is protected as a PDO.
The cliffs of Solutré and Vergisson can be seen from afar and have become a symbol of the place. The soils are limestone and clay, with a noticeable share of marl. Chardonnay here gives wine with notes of apple, citrus and minerality, sometimes with a hint of nuts and butter. The wine can be light and fresh or richer, with oak ageing.
Do not confuse Pouilly-Fuissé with Pouilly-Fumé. Pouilly-Fumé is in the Loire valley and is made from a completely different grape, Sauvignon Blanc. The Mâconnais is the southern part of Burgundy. Pouilly-Fuissé is served with fish, poultry and creamy sauces. For the region it is one of the most recognisable whites, showing what Chardonnay can do beyond Chablis and the Côte d'Or.
