🥃 Ron Zacapa 23
The core line of Guatemalan Zacapa rum, 40% ABV; a blend of rums aged 6 to 23 years in the solera system.
Ron Zacapa 23 is the core line of Guatemalan rum from the Ron Zacapa brand, bottled at 40% ABV. The number 23 does not mean age: according to the producer, it is a blend of rums aged 6 to 23 years. Difford's Guide explicitly advises against reading it as a 23-year-old rum. According to this source, the line was launched in 1976.
Production. The rum is made from first-press sugarcane juice rather than molasses; the juice is thickened over heat and fermented. Ageing follows the solera system in casks previously used for American whiskey, sherry and Pedro Ximénez. Difford's Guide also mentions distillation up to 88% ABV, reduction to 60% before the casks, and six months' rest of the blend in a large American oak vat; the warehouses stand at about 2,300 m.
Why this matters for you. This is the starting point for comparison with the XO and Edición Negra lines: the difference lies in the age of the blend, the casks and the strength. Read the label and do not look here for a 23-year-old ageing. WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
