Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1

A sweet wine from nobly rotten grapes from the town of Rust by Lake Neusiedl.

Ruster Ausbruch is a sweet wine with a protected name from the town of Rust on Lake Neusiedl, in Burgenland, Austria. Rust is a small wine town on the western shore of the lake, and Ausbruch is its most famous wine. It has been renowned since long ago.

The wine is made from grapes affected by noble rot (botrytis). This mould appears in autumn, when there is morning mist over the lake and the days are warm and dry. It pierces the skins, water evaporates from the berries, and sugar, acid and aroma become concentrated. The berries are picked by hand, one by one, so there is little wine.

Furmint, Welschriesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc are used for Ausbruch. The wine is golden and sweet, with aromas of honey, apricot, orange zest and dried fruit, but with good acidity. It ages well.

Ruster Ausbruch is a sweet white wine tied to Burgenland. It is served in small glasses with desserts or cheese. Alcohol is for adults.
