π Pinot Blanc
A white wine grape, a mutation of Pinot Noir, making soft dry wines.
Pinot Blanc is a white grape, a mutation of Pinot Gris, which is itself a mutation of Pinot Noir. A mutation is a chance change in a vine that makes its berries lose their red colour. The variety comes from France and is now grown in many countries.
Wines from Pinot Blanc are usually dry, soft and fresh, with notes of apple, pear and flowers. Acidity is moderate and the body medium. It is less striking than Chardonnay or Riesling, but easy to match with food. Its main home is Alsace in France; it also does well in Baden in Germany and in northern Italy.
Pinot Blanc also goes into sparkling wine: it is blended in Franciacorta and Trento, and in Alsace it makes crΓ©mant. In Austria it is called Weissburgunder and used for sweet wines, such as Ruster Ausbruch. It is a close relative of Pinot Gris.
