📍 Prekmurje
The flat north-east beyond the Mura River.
Prekmurje is a wine district in north-eastern Slovenia, on the flat lands beyond the Mura river, by the borders with Hungary and Austria. It is part of the Podravje wine region (the Drava valley). The hilly part of the area, Goričko and the Lendava hills, alternates with plains where the vine has a harder time than on slopes.
Prekmurje mostly makes white wines. The most widespread grape is Laški Rizling (Welschriesling), which gives light, fresh wines. Beside it grow Pinot Blanc and the local Šipon, the Slovenian name for Furmint, familiar from Hungarian Tokaj. The Podravje region is characterised by wines from botrytised grapes, classified by sweetness in the same way as in Germany: pozna trgatev, izbor, jagodni izbor.
Production in Prekmurje is small, and most of the wine is drunk locally. Local wines go well with the region's cooking, in particular dishes with pumpkin seed oil and meat, and with the traditional layered pastry gibanica.
For travellers Prekmurje is a quiet land of thermal springs and hills, where wine can be tasted right on the estate.
