📜 Savennières

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1 Updated:

Dry white wines from Chenin Blanc from the right bank of the Loire near Angers.

Savennières is an appellation on the Loire in France, near the city of Angers. The vineyards lie on steep slopes of the right bank of the Loire. The soils are schist, a dense dark rock that holds heat well.

Only one grape is used, Chenin Blanc. The wine is white, dry and still, with high acidity, notes of apple, quince and honey, and a clear minerality. In youth it can seem austere and sharp, while with years it softens, opens up and gains nutty, honeyed notes. Good Savennières can age for decades.

Within the appellation there are two special plots with their own names: Coulée de Serrant and Roche aux Moines. They are known separately.

The name is protected as a PDO, a protected designation of origin. Savennières belongs to the Anjou-Saumur district. The wine goes well with fish, seafood and goat's-milk cheese.
