📍 Thermenregion
A spa area south of Vienna with rare grape varieties.
Thermenregion is a wine district in Lower Austria, south of Vienna, at the foot of the Vienna Woods. The name comes from the thermal springs on which spa towns stand, such as Baden bei Wien. It is one of the warmest areas in Austria: the influence of the Pannonian plain makes summers hot.
Rare local white grapes are grown here: Zierfandler and Rotgipfler. They make rich, spicy white wines, especially in the village of Gumpoldskirchen. The main reds are St. Laurent, Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder) and Zweigelt. The district's reds are soft, with light acidity and often a cherry aroma.
Soils are limestone and gravel, giving minerality. Many estates are small and family-run, and in local wine taverns (Heuriger) young wine is sold straight from the barrel.
Thermenregion is part of Lower Austria and lies next to Carnuntum. If you want to try something unusual, such as Zierfandler or Rotgipfler, this is the best place. The district's whites suit spicy dishes and cheese, and the reds game. The name Thermenregion on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
