📜 Tavel
The only Rhône appellation that makes only rosé wines.
Tavel is the only appellation of the Rhône in France where only rosé wines are made. It lies in the Southern Rhône, on the right bank of the river, not far from Avignon. The name is protected as a PDO.
The main grape is Grenache, with Cinsault and other grapes of the region added. Tavel rosés are noticeably darker and fuller than many other rosés. The colour is rich, from strawberry to almost light red, and the taste is more structured. Such wines go well with dishes for which a light red would usually be chosen.
The soils are pebbly, sandy and limestone. The pebbles warm up in the day and give off heat at night, which helps the berries ripen. Tavel belongs to French wine and to rosé as a separate style. It is valued for its particular character: a rosé for food, not just for a hot day. It is served chilled but not too cold.
