📜 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
A noble red wine from Sangiovese around the Tuscan town of Montepulciano.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a noble red wine with a protected name (PDO) from Tuscany. It is made around the town of Montepulciano in the province of Siena. The vineyards lie on hills at altitudes up to 600 metres. The name means noble wine of Montepulciano.
The main grape is Sangiovese, which locals here call Prugnolo Gentile. By the rules it must make up at least 70%, and the rest is other permitted varieties. The wine is dark, with aromas of cherry, plum, violet and spice, noticeable tannins and good acidity. It is aged at least two years, and the Riserva version at least three.
The wine has a long reputation. In the 17th century the poet Francesco Redi, in the poem Bacchus in Tuscany, called Montepulciano the king of all wines. This wine should not be confused with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, where Montepulciano is a grape variety. Here the name is that of the town and the grape is Sangiovese. The wine belongs to still red wines and to Tuscany. It is served with meat, game and cheese.
