🍇 Xarel·lo
A white grape from Catalonia, Spain; one of the three main cava grapes.
Xarel·lo is a white grape from Catalonia, in Spain. It is one of the three main grapes of cava, the Spanish sparkling wine. The other two are Macabeo and Parellada.
The grape grows mostly in Penedès, not far from Barcelona. It copes well with the warm Mediterranean climate. Xarel·lo berries are firm, with thick skin, and the wine from them has good acidity, freshness and noticeable flavour. Xarel·lo gives cava its base and structure, while Macabeo and Parellada add aroma and lightness.
Besides sparkling wine, Xarel·lo is used in still white wines. They can be light and fresh, and sometimes aged on the skins. In Penedès it is seen as one of the symbols of the region.
Xarel·lo also grows nearby, in Alella, and goes into the sparkling wine of Catalonia.
