📍 Mykolaiv region

Mykolaiv region (Mykolaivshchyna) is a wine area in southern Ukraine, on the Black Sea coast. It is part of Ukrainian winemaking: the region borders the Odesa and Kherson regions, where most of the country's southern vineyards are concentrated.

The vineyards lie in the steppe zone with a warm, dry climate, around the Kobleve estuary and near Ochakiv. Both Kobleve and Ochakiv belong to the region. Farms here have traditionally been large, and wine was made mostly for a broad market.

Growers plant local and Eastern European varieties alongside international ones. Whites come from Aligoté, Rkatsiteli and Chardonnay, reds from Cabernet Sauvignon. The whites are usually light and fresh, the reds full and fruity.

By location and grapes, Mykolaiv region fits well into the wine map of Ukraine's Black Sea south. The region lies between the mouths of the Dnipro and the Southern Buh, so sea air and estuaries clearly shape the climate. Wines here are usually drunk young and fresh, and the vines grow on open steppe plots.
