🥃 Aguardente Vínica Lisboa
Portuguese wine spirit under the regional name «Lisboa»: the Atlantic zone north of the Tagus mouth, at least 37.5% ABV; EU application filed in 2017.
Aguardente Vínica Lisboa is a Portuguese wine spirit under the regional name «Lisboa», covering the Atlantic zone north of the mouth of the Tagus. At home the name is defined by Portaria 130/2014, and an EU geographical indication application was filed in 2017; registration is not yet complete.
Law. Portaria 130/2014 lists the product categories under the name Lisboa, including wine spirit and bagaceira, and requires at least 37.5% ABV for both. The zone is the Lisbon district except the municipality of Azambuja, part of the municipalities of the Leiria district and Ourém in Santarém district; the subregions Estremadura and Alta Estremadura are allowed.
Raw materials and control. The wine for distillation is made from the varieties listed in the annex to the Portaria, from vineyards with yields up to 200 hectolitres per hectare. The Portaria sets no special distillation, cask or ageing rules. Other requirements are set by the Lisbon Region Wine Commission (CVR Lisboa), which approves the product after physico-chemical and sensory analysis.
The region and EU rules. The climate is temperate, with 600–700 mm of rain a year; the soils are mostly clay-limestone and sandy-clay. Central Estremadura has long been known for its aguardentes, and there is a separate name here too: Aguardente de Vinho Lourinhã. While application PGI-PT-02373 has the status «applied», the general requirements for wine spirits apply (category 4 of Regulation (EU) 2019/787): distillation below 86% ABV, methanol up to 200 g per hectolitre of pure alcohol.
Why it matters to you. «Lisboa» on a label is a regional name, not a DOC, and it does not promise ageing: long oak ageing is guaranteed by Lourinhã, with a minimum of 24 months. The label is agreed in advance with CVR Lisboa. WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
