Alfred Gratien is a Champagne house in Épernay. According to the house, Alfred Gratien created his first cuvées in 1864 on the Rue Maurice Cerveaux, and the house describes itself as a family affair. Its cellar holds close to a thousand barrels, and the house states that its champagne has been vinified in oak (“sous-bois”) since its beginnings.
According to the house, the post of cellar master has passed within the Jaeger family: Gaston Jaeger took it in 1905, his son Charles in 1951, Jean-Pierre in 1966, and Nicolas Jaeger has run the Épernay cellar since 2007. The house's first parcel-based champagne is Clos Le Village 2018: 100 % Meunier from a walled vineyard of 19.5 ares in Cumières, fewer than 2,000 bottles. For its 160th anniversary it released the Brut Vintage 2008 as 1,600 bottles and 160 jeroboams, each numbered.
Champagne is a wine with a protected designation of origin (AOC/PDO); under its rules the wine goes through a second fermentation in the bottle. Alfred Gratien is a brand; Champagne is the name of a place.
