🍇 Xinomavro

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3 Updated:

A red grape from Macedonia, Greece, the basis of Naoussa wines.

Xinomavro is a red grape from Macedonia in northern Greece. The name means acid black: the wine has high acidity and noticeable tannins. It is considered one of the most important red grapes of Greece.

The main growing areas are Naoussa, Amyndeon, Goumenissa and Rapsani. Naoussa, near the town of Naousa in Imathia, is especially well known: strong reds are made there that keep well. Amyndeon, in Florina, is cooler: both rosé and sparkling wine are made here. The grape likes cool air and altitude, and it ripens late.

Xinomavro wine changes with age. When young it is sharp, with red berries, tomato and olive, and later dried fruit and spice appear. It is sometimes compared with Italy's Nebbiolo, but the grapes are not related.

Xinomavro goes well with meat and stewed dishes. Greeks serve it with hearty food.
