🍷 Aromatised wine

Type of wine ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 7 Updated:

Wine flavoured with herbs, spices or fruit; EU rules define its types.

Aromatised wine is wine to which herbs, spices, fruit or other aromatic substances have been added. The result is a drink with a distinct taste and smell. European Union rules set what may be added and how much wine the product must contain. Aromatised wine must contain at least 75 percent wine.

Many well-known drinks belong to this group. Vermouth is wine infused with herbs, chiefly wormwood. Quinquina and americano are bittersweet aromatised aperitif wines. Close to them are wines with a bitter taste, called bitter wines. Mulled wine and sangria are wines with spices or fruit and are classed with related drinks.

The base is more often white or red wine. Grape spirit is sometimes added for strength and sugar for sweetness. Producers keep their recipes secret.

Aromatised wine is one of the types of wine but stands apart from ordinary wine: its taste is set by more than the grape. These wines are drunk as an aperitif, with ice or in cocktails. Alcohol is for adults.
