🍷 Vermouth
Wine flavoured with herbs and spices, usually wormwood, sweetened and fortified.
Vermouth is wine infused with herbs and spices, sweetened and fortified. It usually includes wormwood. The name comes from the German word Wermut, meaning "wormwood". It belongs to the group of aromatised wines. Vermouth is thought to come from Turin in Piedmont, where such wine began to be made in the 18th century. The base is white wine. To it are added an infusion of herbs, roots, citrus peel and spices, sweetener and spirit. Under European Union rules vermouth has between 14.5 and 22 percent alcohol. Vermouth di Torino has its own protected name. The kinds are: dry (pale, used in the Martini cocktail), red (sweet, with caramel), and white (sweet and pale). Vermouth is also made in France and Spain. Related drinks are quinquina and "americano" with a bitter taste. Vermouth is drunk neat with ice or used in cocktails. Because of its strength it should be drunk moderately and in small servings.
