📍 Sannio
The hills of Benevento with Falanghina.
Sannio is a hilly zone around the city of Benevento in Campania, southern Italy. The name comes from the Samnites, an ancient people who lived here. It is one of the largest wine territories of Campania, and part of that region.
The main grapes are the white Falanghina and the red Aglianico. Sannio produces some of the best-known Falanghina wines: dry, fresh, with citrus and floral aromas. Aglianico from the Taburno mountain area gives Aglianico del Taburno (DOCG), a full-bodied red with high acidity and tannins.
The zone also contains smaller names: Benevento (IGT), Dugenta and Guardia Sanframondi. Barbera, Greco and Fiano are grown as well. Red, white and sparkling wines are made.
Sannio is part of Campania; nearby lies Irpinia, home of Taurasi and Greco di Tufo. Sannio more often offers more affordable wines. Falanghina goes well with seafood and mozzarella, and the red Taburno with meat. The name Sannio on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
