🍷 Bianco vermouth
A sweet pale vermouth with a vanilla and herbal taste.
White vermouth, or bianco, is a sweet pale vermouth with a vanilla-herbal taste. Vermouth is wine infused with herbs and spices and usually fortified with spirit. Under European Union rules such drinks are classed as aromatised wine products.
It is made in Italy and France. The base is white wine. Infusions of herbs, roots, flowers and spices are added, then the drink is sweetened and fortified. In the past wormwood was put into vermouth, and the name comes from the German word Wermut, meaning wormwood. The result is a pale drink, soft and sweet, with notes of vanilla and herbs.
White vermouth stands next to other vermouths: red and dry. It is drunk chilled, over ice or with tonic, and used in cocktails and in cooking. The strength is usually higher than that of ordinary wine.
As with any alcohol, it should be drunk in moderation. On a label it is worth checking the sweetness and the type of vermouth.
