🍷 Vermouth di Torino
Vermouth with a protected name from Piedmont, the birthplace of vermouth.
Vermouth di Torino is vermouth with a protected name from Piedmont, the home of vermouth. It is an aromatised wine: wormwood and other herbs, spices and spirit are added to a wine base. The word vermouth comes from the German name for wormwood, Wermut. The rules are set in the European Union regulation on aromatised wine products (251/2014).
Vermouth was devised in Turin in the late 18th century. The recipe differs for each house and is usually kept secret: citrus peel, roots, cinnamon, vanilla, flowers and dozens of herbs. The base is white wine, to which infusions and sugar or caramel are added. The mixture is then aged. Vermouth can be red and sweet (rosso), white (bianco) or dry. Strength is usually from 14.5 to 22%.
Vermouth di Torino is close to vermouth in general and to Piedmont. It belongs to Italian wine in a broad sense. It is drunk before meals, straight over ice with a slice of citrus, or added to cocktails such as the Negroni and Manhattan. The strength of such a drink should be kept in mind, and it should be enjoyed in moderation.
