🥃 Breton whisky (Whisky de Bretagne)
French geographical indication since 2008: whisky from malted and other cereals, distilled and matured in Brittany for at least 3 years.
Breton whisky (Whisky de Bretagne, Whisky breton) is a French geographical indication for whisky made from malted cereals, to which whole grains of others may be added, distilled and matured for at least three years in oak casks of up to 700 litres in Brittany. It is bottled at 40% ABV or more.
In the EU’s eAmbrosia register the name is EUGI00000014078, protected since 13 February 2008. The specification was approved by a French order of 30 December 2014 and the technical file sent to the European Commission in 2017; the applicant is the Breton whisky protection syndicate, control is by INAO. The zone comprises 1,409 communes in the departments of Côtes-d’Armor, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan and the part of Loire-Atlantique north of the Loire.
Permitted cereals are barley, wheat, buckwheat, triticale, rye, spelt, maize and oats, none genetically modified. The mash is made with water from 50 °C, and fermentation lasts 36 hours to 12 days. Distillation is in copper stills of up to 60 hl or copper columns. Water for mashing and dilution comes only from the zone; according to the specification, the soft water from the Armorican Massif’s granite influences fermentation.
Brittany long distilled cider: small “à repasse” stills, once the swan neck was replaced, also suited grain wort. Breton whisky has been made since 1958, when a distillery in Ille-et-Vilaine began to produce it; the first Breton single malt was sold in 1998.
Why this matters to you. “Whisky de Bretagne” guarantees Breton distillation and maturation of at least three years, but not barley alone — the whisky may also be made from buckwheat or rye. “Single malt” here means one distillery, only malted barley and a simple still. Caramel for colour is permitted. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe dose of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions
Is it true that Breton whisky is made only from barley?
No. The specification allows malted cereals with whole grains of others: barley, wheat, buckwheat, triticale, rye, spelt, maize or oats. Only “single malt” must be made from 100% malted barley.
Where is Breton whisky made?
In 1,409 communes on the Armorican Massif: in the departments of Côtes-d’Armor, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan and in the part of Loire-Atlantique north of the Loire. All stages, from grinding the grain to maturation, take place there only.
How long does the wort ferment for Breton whisky?
From 36 hours to 12 days, with no chemical additives to speed up or slow down fermentation. The specification explains that Brittany’s mild climate gives a fruity wort without fermentation faults.
What does “single malt” mean on Breton whisky?
Whisky from a single distillery, made only from malted barley and distilled in batches in a simple still up to 88% ABV. The designation is written under the name “Whisky de Bretagne” in type no larger than the name.
When did Breton whisky appear?
According to the specification, it has been made since 1958, when a distillery in the Ille-et-Vilaine department began making whisky after an increase in the import duty on spirits. It has been a protected name in the EU since 13 February 2008.
