🥃 Casamigos Mezcal Joven
Unaged Casamigos mezcal from Espadín agave in Oaxaca: earth-pit roasting, tahona crushing, double distillation in copper stills, 40% ABV.
Casamigos Mezcal Joven is an unaged mezcal from the Casamigos brand, and the only line in the range that is not tequila. It is made from Espadín agave in Oaxaca and bottled at 40% ABV. According to the producer, the aroma includes tamarind and pomegranate, fresh mint and dried oregano; the taste carries smoke and black pepper, with a long, smooth finish.
According to the brand's website, the agave is slow-roasted in earth pits and crushed with a traditional tahona wheel, then distilled twice in copper stills. Difford's Guide adds that roasting lasts four to six days and fermentation six to eight. There are no barrels: joven means the mezcal was not aged.
Why this matters to you. This is not a tequila: it uses a different agave (Espadín rather than blue Weber), comes from a different region, and has smoke in its taste. Compare it with the other Casamigos lines by its raw material, not by the brand name. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
