🥃 Casamigos

Casamigos is a tequila brand created in 2013 by George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman. The spirit is made from 100% Weber blue agave grown in Jalisco, Mexico. Since 2017 the brand has belonged to Diageo, which, according to press reports, agreed a deal worth up to one billion US dollars.

History. According to BeverageDaily, the deal was announced in June 2017: Diageo paid 700 million dollars upfront and up to 300 million more depending on results over ten years. The founders remained involved in the brand's development.

How it is made. The Casamigos website says the tequila is made from 100% Weber blue agave grown in Jalisco. Where exactly it is distilled is not stated on the official pages, so we do not claim it. Tequila is governed by the standard NOM-006-SCFI-2012: strength of 35-55% ABV, and the "100% de agave" category does not allow sugars from other plants.

Range. Blanco rests in stainless-steel tanks and is not aged in oak. Reposado, according to Diageo, is aged for at least six months in American white oak; Difford's Guide says seven months, which is a difference between sources. Añejo is aged for at least 12 months. There is also Cristalino, a reposado that is distilled twice and charcoal-filtered, and a Mezcal Joven made from espadín agave, as well as canned ready-to-drink cocktails.

Why this matters to you. The word "Reposado" or "Añejo" only indicates the minimum ageing set by the standard: two months and one year. Casamigos states its own figures, so read the label. Blue agave is the only permitted raw material for tequila. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
