Wines from the Murge hills around the famous Castel del Monte.

Castel del Monte is a wine zone in Puglia, in southern Italy, on the hills of the Murge plateau. It takes its name from the castle of Castel del Monte, an octagonal 13th-century castle built on the orders of Emperor Frederick II. It is now on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Around the castle lie limestone hills with hot days and cool nights. These are exactly the conditions the local grapes need. The main red varieties are Uva di Troia (Nero di Troia), Bombino Nero and Aglianico. Red, rosé and white wines with a protected name are made from them. The reds are dense, with cherry and spice. The rosés from Bombino Nero are fresh and dry.

Castel del Monte is one of the best-known zones of Puglia. Both simpler wines and aged riserva are made here. They are served with meat, pasta and cheese. The whites and rosés suit fish and starters.

The name belongs to the Murgia and to the still wines of Puglia. It has become the region’s calling card. Alcohol is for adults.
