📜 Chambertin
A famous grand cru of Gevrey-Chambertin, Napoleon's favourite wine, made from Pinot Noir.
Chambertin is a famous grand cru in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. It is a red wine from a single grape, Pinot Noir. It is said to have been Napoleon's favourite wine.
"Grand cru" is the highest level of the Burgundy classification. The Chambertin vineyard is small and lies on a slope where the soil drains well. Nearby are the village's other grands crus: Mazis-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin and others.
Chambertin is considered powerful and dense for Pinot Noir. It has a dark colour, aromas of cherry, prune and spice, and firm tannin. It needs ageing and opens up after about ten years. Because of its rarity and prestige it is expensive.
Chambertin is a still red wine. In the 19th century the village name Gevrey was joined with the name of the vineyard: Gevrey-Chambertin.
