🍷 Château-Chalon

Type of wine ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 5

The most famous vin jaune, from the village of Château-Chalon in the Jura.

Château-Chalon is the most famous vin jaune, the "yellow wine", from the village of the same name in the Jura in eastern France. The village stands on a rock above the valley, and the vineyards lie on the slopes around it.

The wine is made from the white grape Savagnin. It is aged in casks for at least six years and three months without topping up the part that evaporates. A film of yeast forms on the surface, protecting the wine from air and giving a distinctive aroma of walnut, curry and dried fruit. The taste is dry and rich, with sharp acidity.

Vin jaune is sold in special bottles called clavelin, holding 62 centilitres. That is what remains of a litre of wine after the long ageing. The wine lives for decades.

In the Château-Chalon appellation only vin jaune is made; there is no ordinary wine. It belongs to French wine, and vin jaune is a related style that resembles the Sherry wines of Spain but is not fortified. It is served with Comté cheese and poultry.
