📜 Bâtard-Montrachet
A white grand cru of Burgundy from Chardonnay on the border of Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet.
Bâtard-Montrachet is a white grand cru wine from Burgundy in France. The vineyard lies in the Côte de Beaune, on the border of two villages: Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. It is one of the best known white wines in the world.
It is made from Chardonnay. The site is small, on a slope, with limestone soil and good exposure to the sun. The wine is usually full-bodied, smelling of ripe fruit, nuts and butter, while keeping good acidity. It is often aged in oak barrels and allowed to mature for years in bottle.
The name relates to neighbouring Montrachet, the most famous plot of this hill. The word "bâtard" means "illegitimate son", a playful comparison with the main Montrachet. Bâtard-Montrachet is a protected designation of origin (PDO). It is expensive, so the wine is more often bought as a collectible or for a special occasion. The vineyard area is small, so few bottles are produced.
