📜 Montrachet
The legendary grand cru between Puligny and Chassagne, one of the world's finest white wines.
Montrachet is a legendary grand cru of Burgundy, France. The vineyard lies on the border of two villages, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. It is regarded as one of the best places in the world for white wine. The name is usually translated as "bald hill", since the slope was once bare.
The wine is made only from Chardonnay. It is powerful and deep, with notes of citrus, nuts, honey and minerals. Limestone soil and an east-facing slope give the berries sugar and freshness. The wine ages well in the bottle, and many bottles are kept for decades. The plot is small, so there is little wine and the price is very high.
Montrachet belongs to the Côte de Beaune, the southern part of the Golden Slope. Nearby lie other grands crus with similar names, such as Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet. It is a still white wine, served with fish, lobster and poultry. For many people Montrachet has become the benchmark for Chardonnay.
