Loess slopes around Ilok on the Danube.

The Croatian Danube is a wine zone in the far east of Croatia, along the Danube, near the Serbian border. It is part of the Slavonia and Croatian Danube region. It includes the surroundings of Ilok, the country's easternmost town, as well as Erdut and Baranja. Hills are covered with loess, and vineyards often grow on slopes above the river.

The climate is continental: warm summers, cold winters and autumn mists. This suits white grapes. The main grape is Graševina (the Croatian name for Welschriesling). It makes dry and off-dry wines, and sweet ones in good years. The second important grape is Traminac (Traminer): spicy, aromatic, with a scent of roses.

International white and red grapes are also grown. Old cellars survive in Ilok, where wine has been stored for many decades.

The Croatian Danube gives many simple wines, but the best estates show what continental Croatia can do. The Serbian region of Srem lies next door, and to the west the rest of Slavonia. Graševina goes well with Danube fish, poultry and the local kulen, a paprika sausage.
