The name honours Ballechin, another farm distillery in Perthshire that closed in 1927. The ten-year-old expression is matured mainly in ex-bourbon casks, with a share of whisky from ex-Oloroso sherry casks added. The other Ballechin releases are limited bottlings from wine, rum and other casks.
Why it matters to you. Ballechin is a peated whisky, whereas Edradour 10 Year Old is unpeated and sherried, so do not confuse them. The age on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle. The WHO reminds us that no level of alcohol consumption is safe.

What to read next
- 🍷 Alcohol and health — Alcohol in any drink is harmful in large amounts, and the risks grow with the quantity.
- 🥃 Barley and malt in whisky — Malted barley is the base of whisky: malt enzymes convert starch in the mash, and EU whisky is distilled below 94.8% vol.
- 🍷 Oloroso — Dry sherry of exclusively oxidative ageing, without flor; 17–22 % vol.
- 🍷 Drunk driving — Never drive after drinking wine: alcohol slows your reactions.
- 🥃 Ex-bourbon barrel — American white oak cask of 180–200 litres used for bourbon: bourbon may only be aged in new charred casks, so used ones go to Scotch, Irish whiskey and rum.
