📜 Fitou

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1

Red wines between Corbières and the sea, one of Languedoc's oldest appellations.

Fitou is a protected appellation in France, one of the oldest in Languedoc. It lies between the Corbières hills and the Mediterranean. Red wines are made here. The climate is warm and dry, winds blow, and the soil is stony and poor.

Fitou combines several grapes: Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Carignan gives density and acidity, Grenache warmth and softness, Syrah colour and spice, Mourvèdre structure. The wines are juicy, with notes of dark berries, herbs and spice. They are aged in barrels and tanks, and many open up well after a few years.

Fitou belongs to Languedoc, a wine land in the south of France, and is made as a still red wine. It is served with grilled meat, charcuterie and cheese. Next to Fitou lie other southern French appellations, the nearest being Corbières. For anyone getting to know Languedoc, it is a good example of local character.
