Red wines at the foot of the Larzac plateau, in a cool part of Languedoc.

Terrasses du Larzac are red wines from the foot of the Larzac plateau, in a cool part of Languedoc in southern France. The name is protected as a protected designation of origin (PDO) of the European Union and is listed in the eAmbrosia register. The vineyards lie north of Montpellier, on terraces, which gave the name.

The climate here is cooler than on the coast. It is warm by day and noticeably fresh at night, which helps the grapes keep acidity and aroma. The soils vary: limestone, gravel, red clay. The wines are complex and elegant, not just powerful.

They are made from a blend of grapes: Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, and also Carignan. The blend of the first three is called GSM, and here it is the base. The red wines are aged in barrels or steel tanks and served with meat, game and cheese.

Terrasses du Larzac is a young name, but it has quickly gained recognition as one of the best areas of Languedoc. As with any alcohol, the wine should be drunk in moderation.
