📜 Frascati Superiore
A white wine from the volcanic hills of Frascati south-east of Rome.
Frascati Superiore is a white wine from the volcanic hills of Frascati, south-east of Rome, in the Lazio region of Italy. The area is part of the Castelli Romani, the castle hills around Rome. It is a protected appellation, a PDO. Superiore means a wine with slightly higher strength and stricter rules.
The main grapes are Malvasia (including Malvasia Puntinata) and Trebbiano. Other grapes may be added. The soil is volcanic, and the warm climate makes the wine soft and aromatic. The taste is fresh, with notes of pear, flowers and almond. The wine is dry, more rarely off-dry or sweet.
Frascati has long been tied to Rome. It was drunk in Roman taverns and was the everyday wine of the Romans. Today it is served chilled as a light wine with fish, pasta and Roman food such as porchetta. Frascati is an example of Italian wines best drunk young and fresh, without long ageing.
