🥃 Kahlúa Especial
Darker Kahlúa line at 35% ABV, made from arabica from Veracruz; according to Difford’s Guide it has less sugar than Original.
Kahlúa Especial is the stronger and darker line of the Kahlúa brand: a rum-based coffee liqueur at 35% ABV made from arabica coffee. The producer describes it as opaque, ink-brown, with an intense espresso flavour and deeply roasted coffee. According to Difford’s Guide, Especial was launched in 2002 in the USA, Canada and Australia.
The producer says Especial is made from selected arabica, and Difford’s Guide specifies that the coffee comes from Veracruz. The same guide mentions less sugar than in the regular Kahlúa and a richer coffee profile. The producer’s product page does not give the detailed proportions of coffee and rum, so we do not list them either.
Why this matters to you. Especial is 35% ABV and Original is 16%: that is more than twice as strong, so cocktail proportions need to be calculated differently. The producer suggests drinking it with ice or in an Espresso Martini. Availability depends on the market: Difford’s Guide notes that it is not sold in the UK. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
