🥃 Marne wine spirit (Eau-de-vie de vin de la Marne)

Protected spirit name ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 5 Updated:

French wine spirit from the Champagne appellation area; second name Fine champenoise; EU-protected name since 1989; clear or aged at least 24 months in oak, from 40% ABV.

Marne wine spirit (Eau-de-vie de vin de la Marne), or Fine champenoise, is a French grape spirit distilled from the wines that remain during the making of Champagne. The name has been protected in the EU since 1989, and in 2023 a second name, Fine champenoise, was added to the register. It comes clear or aged in oak, and the bottled strength is from 40% ABV.

Region and raw material. The zone matches the Champagne appellation: the cuesta slopes in the Marne, Aube, Aisne, Haute-Marne and Seine-et-Marne departments, on chalk and limestone, with an oceanic and continental climate. Only wines made under the Champagne rules are distilled, at 6–12% ABV. It is the only wine spirit made solely from sparkling wine production.

Distillation. Three methods are allowed: double distillation in a copper pot still of up to 25 hl, a cascade of up to five vessels with copper columns, or a continuous copper column. A single apparatus gives no more than 70 hl of pure alcohol per day, and the fresh spirit is up to 75% ABV.

Aging. The clear spirit rests at least three months in inert containers. The aged spirit matures at least 24 months in oak casks of up to 10 hl, and wood chips are forbidden. Age marks: VS from 4 years, VSOP from 6, XO from 10. The aroma is flowers, white apple and pear, and with age vanilla, toast and tobacco.

Why this matters to you. Fine champenoise is not Fine Champagne cognac: it is a wine spirit from the Champagne region, not a blend of cognac crus. Do not confuse it with marc de Champagne, which is made from grape pressings. The WHO reminds us: there is no safe level of alcohol.
