🥃 Martell XO
Martell Extra Old Cognac: more than 150 spirits aged 15 to 35 years, with a focus on Grande Champagne, 40% ABV; barrels of Tronçais oak.
Martell XO is an Extra Old category Cognac from the Martell house, 40% ABV. According to Difford's Guide, the blend is made of more than 150 Cognac spirits aged roughly 15 to 35 years, with a focus on the Grande Champagne cru. There is no age statement on the label; according to the same source, Martell developed the Extra Old blend in 1819.
Martell distils only clear wines without lees from Ugni Blanc grapes and makes its barrels from Tronçais oak. Before bottling the blend rests in vats for about four months, longer than VS or Cordon Bleu. The bottle has a distinctive half-moon shape, introduced in 2005.
Why this matters to you. XO is the oldest age designation: the youngest spirit in the blend has spent at least ten years in oak. Compare it with Cordon Bleu, where half the blend comes from Borderies, and with the younger VSOP. The WHO reminds us: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
