The slopes of the Mecsek hills.

Pécs is a wine district in southern Hungary, on the southern slopes of the Mecsek mountains near the city of Pécs. It belongs to the large Pannon region. The climate is warm, almost Mediterranean, because the mountains shelter it from northern winds. It is one of the warmest districts in Hungary.

A local speciality is the white Cirfandli (called Zierfandler in Austria), which in Hungary grows mostly here and makes spicy, full-bodied whites. Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc are also grown. Reds are made in smaller amounts.

Soils are loess and clay, with plenty of limestone in the hills. Thanks to the long summer the grapes ripen well, and the wines are aromatic and soft.

Pécs is part of the Pannon region. Nearby lies Villány, one of Hungary's red wine areas, where Cabernet Franc and Portugieser are grown. Pécs is better known for whites. Cirfandli suits poultry, pork and spicy dishes. The name Pécs on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
