🍷 Spumante
Italian word for fully sparkling wine.
Spumante is the Italian word for fully sparkling wine. The pressure in the bottle is at least 3 atmospheres. The word comes from Italian spuma, foam. If the pressure is lower, 1 to 2.5 atmospheres, the wine is called frizzante, or semi-sparkling.
Spumante is made in two main ways. With the traditional method the second fermentation happens in the bottle, as for Franciacorta. With the Charmat method the wine ferments in large sealed tanks, as for most prosecco. Asti uses its own single-fermentation method.
Spumante can be dry, off-dry or sweet, white or rosé. The word appears on labels all over Italy, so on its own it says nothing about region or quality; for that, look at the place name and category. Spumante is a large part of Italian wine, especially for export.
