The southernmost and warmest region, with many Burgundian varieties.

Baden is the southernmost and warmest wine region of Germany. It stretches about 400 kilometres along the eastern bank of the Rhine, from the Tauber in the north to Lake Constance in the south, bordering France (Alsace) and Switzerland. By vineyard area it is the third largest region of the country.

The climate is warmer than in other German regions, which is why Baden is the only German region in EU wine zone B (the others are in zone A). The main red grape is Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), and among whites are Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Müller-Thurgau and Gutedel. The volcanic slopes of the Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg are well known.

The region includes the districts of Bodensee, Markgräflerland, Kaiserstuhl, Tuniberg, Breisgau, Ortenau, Kraichgau, Badische Bergstrasse and Tauberfranken. A large share of the wine is made by winegrowers' cooperatives.

Baden is part of German winemaking. In style its wines, especially the reds, are closer to those of Alsace and Burgundy. Red Spätburgunder suits poultry and meat, and white Grauburgunder fish and local dishes. The name Baden on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
